Mectizan Donation Program Status Report for Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis

Figure 1 represents the number of Mectizan treatments approved for community-based mass treatment programs since 1988. Treatments approved for initial and continuing programs are indicated separately.

The number of treatments approved for 2003 is 56,220,567, most of which were through continuation applications totaling 52,760,743 approved treatments requested in 71 applications. The remaining treatments approved were for new programs totaling 3,459,824 treatments requested in 8 applications.

The number of combined treatments of Mectizan and albendazole approved for Mass Drug Administration in the context of national Programs to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (PELFs) through 2003 is approximately 43,808,127 (figure 2). Countries currently implementing LF elimination programs where Mectizan and albendazole are co-administered include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, and Yemen.
